Shropshire is a unitary authority, so waste collection sits with Shropshire Council, not the Town Council.

Runs the (chargeable) collection of large household items such as furniture and appliances.

Owns, maintains and pays the energy for 300+ street lights at various locations across Shifnal (contractor currently E.ON).
The Town Council publishes a list and a map of the lights it owns on its Street Lighting page. If your light isn't on that list, it's almost certainly Shropshire Council's — report it there instead. Not sure? Email the Town Council and they'll point you to the right place.

Shifnal Town Council lists footpaths among its own services but publishes no detail on which ones, so report a problem to Shropshire Council, who hold the definitive map. If in doubt the Town Council will point you to the right place.

Trees in private gardens or on private land are the responsibility of the landowner, not the council.
A dangerous tree overhanging the highway can be reported to Shropshire Council, who may require the owner to act. Trees with a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or in a conservation area need planning consent before work — check with Shropshire Council planning.

Shifnal Town Council is a statutory consultee — it comments on applications and can object, but it does NOT make the decision. The decision is Shropshire Council's. You can view and comment on applications via the Shropshire Council planning portal.

Investigates development carried out without permission or in breach of conditions.
Report a suspected breach of planning control using the council's online enforcement form. The council doesn't investigate anonymous reports, but keeps complainants' details confidential.

Checks building work against building regulations for safety and standards.
Apply online via a 'full plans' or 'building notice' application. Building control can instead be carried out by an approved private inspector rather than the council.

Bills and collects council tax, including discounts, exemptions and banding queries.
Your council tax bill includes a small precept for Shifnal Town Council, which funds Town Council services. Property band appeals go to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), not the council.

Adult social care has its own statutory complaints procedure, separate from corporate complaints, and can escalate to the Local Government & Social Care Ombudsman. In an emergency where someone is at immediate risk, call 999.

Covers premises and personal alcohol/entertainment licences, temporary event notices, and taxi (hackney carriage and private hire) licensing. Premises applications run a 28-day consultation.

Allotments

Administers 52 allotment plots for residents to rent, across Priorslee Road, Aston Street and Broadway.
Charges run from £14 to £69 a year depending on plot size and facilities. The waiting list is first come, first served and the Town Council warns a plot typically takes 24–48 months to come up. Send the Allotment Request Form to accounts@shifnaltowncouncil.gov.uk.

Parks, open spaces & grass cutting (town land)

Maintains the Town Council’s parks, play areas and open spaces, and cuts the grass and hedges on its own land.
The Town Council cuts Wheatfield Drive Recreation Area, Jubilee Play Area, Curriers Lane Play Area, its three allotment sites, Priorslee Road Cemetery, the grounds around Shifnal Community Hub and St Andrew’s closed churchyard. It states that all other grassed areas, verges and hedges are Shropshire Council’s — see ‘Grass verges & grounds (roadside / adopted land)’.

Manages Priorslee Road Cemetery, including burials, memorials and grounds.
The Town Council does not employ a gravedigger, so a burial has to be arranged through a funeral director. Burial and ashes plots can be bought from the Town Council, which publishes its 2026–2027 burial fees and its rules for burials and memorials.

The Old Fire Station (exhibition & room hire)

Runs the Old Fire Station on Shrewsbury Road as an exhibition centre and meeting room, home to the town’s history exhibition.
The history exhibition, run by Shifnal Local History Group, is free and open Fridays 2–4pm and Saturdays 10am–12noon. Room hire is £15 per hour, £43 a half day, £82 a full day, booked through the Town Council on 01952 461420.

Not fully verified. Parking in Shifnal is free. The Town Council maintains both town-centre car parks and pays their running costs, and in 2015 Shropshire Council consulted on transferring their management to the Town Council — but no official page confirms who owns them today, so treat the ownership position as unconfirmed and check with either council before relying on it. Wider parking policy, on-street parking and enforcement are Shropshire Council’s.
